The Glen Urquhart School contacted exUrban, Inc for help in transforming its flash-based site into a site better able to take advantage of the exploding social web and to mirror the school’s ethos of openness, learning, and growth through exploration.
Organize and rally a diverse group of stakeholders and board members toward a common platform that would beautifully reflect the school and its activities as well as prove easy for all to use in contributing to, and shaping the school’s web presence.
Specifically, the new site needed to be easy to maintain and edit, provide the opportunity for rich and continually updated content, account for future growth, permit use of content from across the web and integrate easily with social channels.
In conjunction with staff-stakeholders and board members, the team selected WordPress MU as the platform. Site architecture was overhauled to reflect the full spectrum of the GUS experience. Emphasis was placed on enabling prospective families and current members of the GUS community to quickly locate information most relevant to them.
Knowing that the GUS staff, students and families would maintain and grow the site after launch, we created easy to use patterns utilizing custom fields that allow easy content updates across the site. The WPMU platform enables staff-members to create their own sites to communicate with families, express themselves, articulate new ideas emerging within education and current events within the school.
Images are hosted at the school’s Flickr account to lessen server load and provide a robust satellite site. This and various other “listening posts” were created and integrated with the GUS site to meet the goals of the redesign.
When working with a client where culture and community play a large role, the ethos of the brand can often spark functional solutions that not only reflect the spirit of the organization, but also facilitate the work on a daily basis.
